8 DIY Cleaning Hacks Your House Needs

Do you want your house to be tidy all the time? Are you impressed by the aromatic fragrance coming from the living room of your neighbour’s house? Surprisingly, cleaning a home doesn’t involve hours of scrubbing or relying on out-of-budget cleaning products.

Some people think of cleaning as sweeping and mopping. That is just one part of cleaning. You might be doing both daily and still feel that there is dirt and dust in the house. If you are one of those people or if you are simply looking for DIY cleaning solutions for your spring cleaning – this blog is for you!

1.      Couch Stains

Do you have an old couch stain you thought was too hard to remove? Even if you don’t have kids, we all have had that occasional spill on the couch.

Who has never had a couch spill before, right?

After all, our couch is the one place that has seen us happy drinking, sad drinking and even drinking when we are bored. Removing these stains can seem like a pain. But, you can use the following DIY’s depending on the material of the couch.

  • For water stains, mix a spoon of dishwashing liquid with water. Put it on a cloth and blot it on the stain. Rinse the cloth and dry the blot.
  • For oil-based stains, you need to use rubbing alcohol. Apply it on a cloth and blot the stain. Remove the rubbing alcohol by blotting it with a clean cloth after that.

2.      Carpet Stains

Just like couch stains, carpet stains are hard to go. But, simply using clear vodka, rubbing alcohol or wine will remove it. All you need to do is the following:

  • Blot the stain with a clean cloth if it is new. However, for old stains, you can skip this part.
  • Directly pour your solution on it.
  • Wait for it and then rub a clean cloth on it.

3.      Water Stains

Getting those though, water stains off surfaces can be a nightmare. Scrubbing them does no good, blotting them just makes them lighter and no amount of rubbing them removes them. So, what to do? Depending on where the water stains are, you can use the following solutions:

  • For general water stains, you can apply shaving cream and let it sit for 5-7 minutes. After that, clean it up with a dry cloth.
  • The water stains in the bathroom are a tough fight. Mix clear white vinegar with water in equal parts. Now, spray it evenly on all the surfaces with water stains. Let it sit for 30-45 minutes and rub it with a soft brush. Rinse and let it dry off.
  • For harder stains, use a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water. 3 parts bicarbonate and 1 part water. After cleaning the glass with water and vinegar, apply the paste to the glass. Let the solution get firm. Once it starts to dry off, spray the vinegar and water solution on it.

Pro Tip: You will see a foam forming when the vinegar hits the paste. This will show that it is working.

  • Rinse off and see the magic happen.

4.      Eliminate the Dust

The biggest mistake we make while cleaning is forgetting to open the windows. If you are dusting with a cloth, the dust does not evaporate. However, it just settles down somewhere else after a while. Even if it is cold, open the windows while you are cleaning. Let fresh air and sunlight inside flush the room of dust and contaminants.

Remember to flip over the rug to get rid of all the dust!

5.      Clean the Shower Head

Some people don’t give importance to cleaning the shower head! After all, it is going to get dirty again. But, it is essential to do so as grout and dirt build up on it. All you need to do is hang a plastic bag full of vinegar on top of the shower head. Hang it overnight and you won’t even need to scrub on it.

6.      Clean the Microwave

Getting in the nooks and crannies of the microwave is an impossible task. The following trick will get rid of all the grease:

  • Take a bowl of water and add the juice of 1 or 2 lemons.
  • Set the microwave to high and put the water and lemon mixture in it for 3 minutes.
  • The steam from the water will help loosen up the grease.
  • Once cool, rub it with clear water.

7.      Clean Wood

Just like other materials in the house, wood is also prone to marks.

  • You can sprinkle table salt over lighter marks.
  • Use half a lemon and rub it on the marks.
  • Let it sit for 4-5 hours and clean it will water.

This solution will also work to clean your dirty grill. For tougher stains on the grill, heat it well. Now, carefully dip half a lemon in salt and wipe off the buildup.

8.      Clean the Bathing Tub

The bathing tub can get dirty too. Cleaning it daily can be impossible to do so. For a quick and thorough clean, do the following:

  • Take half a cup of baking soda, and mix it with hot water and 1 cup of clear vinegar.
  • Pour this solution into the tub and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  • Now, fill the tub with boiling water and let the water sit for 1 hour more.
  • Open the drain
  • Rinse with clean water.
